Why Local Sourcing Matters in Event Catering (And How We Do It)

Good food at an event doesn't happen by accident. It starts long before the day itself; with where the ingredients come from, who produced them, and how far they've travelled to get there.

At Brinkley's, local sourcing isn't something we added to our website to sound more appealing. It's the way we've operated since we started, because we believe the best events are built on the best ingredients, and the best ingredients don't tend to travel very far.

In this article, we'll walk you through what local sourcing actually means in event catering, why it makes a genuine difference to the food on the plate and the environment around it, and exactly how we make it work across every event we cater in Oxfordshire and beyond.

What "Locally Sourced" Actually Means in Event Catering

The term gets used a lot, and not always honestly. For some caterers, "local" means anywhere in the UK. For others, it's a loose label applied to one or two ingredients while the rest comes from a national wholesaler.

Our approach is more straightforward. We prioritise suppliers and producers who operate close to us; in Oxfordshire, the Cotswolds, and the surrounding area. We're not rigid about a specific radius, because that would be impractical, but the question we always ask is: can we get this from someone nearby, and can we trust where it's come from?

There are times when fully local sourcing isn't possible; seasonal availability, volume requirements, and specific dietary needs all play a part. When that happens, we're transparent about it. But local is always the starting point, not an afterthought.

The Real Benefits of Local Sourcing at Events

Better Flavour, Fresher Ingredients

Produce that hasn't spent days in refrigerated transport tastes different. When fruit and vegetables are harvested at the right time and don't travel far before they're used, they arrive in better condition; more flavourful, more nutritious, and better to cook with.

This is part of why we make over 80% of what we serve in-house. Every sauce, every salad, every element we can prepare ourselves, we do. It gives us full control over quality from the supplier to the plate, and it means we're not masking average ingredients with bought-in shortcuts.

Supporting Local Producers and the Oxfordshire Economy

When we buy from a local farm or bakery, that money stays in the regional economy. For many small producers, supplying businesses like ours is a meaningful part of how they operate. That relationship matters to us.

We work with suppliers we know and trust, people whose businesses we're genuinely glad to support. You'll find more on our specific partners further down this article, but the principle is simple: if there's a good local option, we'll choose it.

Reducing Environmental Impact

Shorter supply chains mean fewer food miles, less refrigerated transport, and a smaller carbon footprint. Local sourcing sits alongside our other sustainability commitments;  biodegradable and compostable packaging, uniforms made from sustainable materials, and low-waste practices at every event.

None of these things are complicated in isolation, but together they add up to a way of operating that we think is more responsible. Events don't have to be wasteful, and catering doesn't have to come at an environmental cost.

How We Build Local Sourcing Into Every Event

Local sourcing only works in practice if it's built into the planning process from the start, not bolted on at the end.

When a client comes to us, we start by understanding the event; the type, the scale, the guest list, the venue, and any dietary requirements. From there, we build a menu and vendor selection around what fits, and that always includes thinking about what's local, what's in season, and what makes sense for that specific occasion.

Our supplier network gives us a strong foundation, but we're not fixed to it. If a client has their own trusted producers they'd like us to work with, we're happy to integrate them. If a venue has local suppliers they regularly partner with, we'll consider those too. The goal is always the right food for that event, not a one-size-fits-all approach.

Allergen information, compliance documentation, and health and safety requirements are handled across all suppliers as standard. Local sourcing and rigorous compliance aren't in tension, we manage both as part of the same process.

Local Sourcing Across Different Event Types

This approach applies regardless of the type of event we're catering.

For weddings, seasonal menus reflect the time of year naturally. A summer wedding lends itself to different produce than an autumn one, and working with what's genuinely in season tends to produce better results than forcing ingredients that aren't.

For festivals, the challenge is volume. High-footfall events require suppliers who can meet demand consistently. Our local network is built with that in mind — we know what each supplier can reliably deliver, and we plan accordingly.

For corporate events, local and ethical sourcing is increasingly something clients ask about directly. Businesses want catering that aligns with their own values, and being able to provide clear information about where food comes from is something we're well placed to do.

For heritage venues, the kind of estates and historic sites we work with regularly across Oxfordshire, local sourcing also makes practical sense. It complements the setting, and it fits with the operational sensitivities these venues often have around waste, access, and environmental impact.

Our Trusted Local Suppliers

These are the producers and suppliers at the heart of how we operate:

Marks Cotswold Bakery — Fresh, quality bread that goes into everything from our flatbreads to our roast rolls. A Cotswold institution.

Jericho Coffee Traders — Oxford-based, ethically sourced coffee that we're proud to serve. Jericho share our belief that what's in the cup should be traceable.

Barefoot Bakery — An Oxford bakery with a strong commitment to quality ingredients and honest baking.

Todenham Manor Farm — A Cotswold farm producing high-welfare meat. Knowing where the meat comes from, and how the animals are raised, matters to us.

Produce Warriors — Fresh produce suppliers who prioritise quality and work closely with growers.

Blenheim Palace Estate producers — Working with producers connected to the Blenheim estate gives us access to exceptional local ingredients with a strong sense of provenance.

We're always open to adding to this network. If there's a supplier local to your venue who you'd like us to consider, get in touch and we'll explore it.

Why This Matters to Us

We started Brinkley's because we wanted to do event catering differently; with better food, more honest practices, and a genuine commitment to the places and communities we work in.

Local sourcing is part of that. It produces better food, it supports producers we respect, and it reduces the environmental footprint of the events we're part of. Those aren't separate reasons, they're all connected.

Sustainability isn't a box we tick. It's just how we work.
